Google Penguin Update: Everything You Need To Know About it!

Google keeps on refining its methods a.k.a algorithms to make the search results better. One such major algorithmic update that took place in April 2012 was Penguin 1.0. This update targeted all those websites which had suspicious, vague, low quality backlinks and keyword rich anchor texts. Alongwith the mayhem of Penguin 1.0 came another update, none other than Penguin 2.0. Lets know more about Google’s Penguin update..

What Is Google Penguin Update?

All Google updates are focused to bring about better, appropriate and best search results using Google search engine. Whatever results we see after searching for a query, are somehow pushed up to the first page of Google using some tactics and gimmicks. The tricks used are the logics and maneuvering techniques of SEOs and Webmasters.

However, all the Penguin updates were addressed towards the manipulative inbound and unnatural link profiles. A bad link profile can be best described as links:

From websites that aren’t relevant to your niche.
Paid links.
Links from low quality websites.
Links with exact match anchor text (i.e. over optimized).
Keyword rich anchor texts/links.
Aftermath Of Google Penguin Update

After Google Penguin was implemented, it affected about 3.1% English search queries, approx.3% queries in various languages such as Arabic, German, Chinese. However, the bigger loss was of all those websites that had spam in it.
After Penguin 1.1 was rolled out in May 2012, websites that used canny techniques to get high rankings were penalized.
Penguin 3, released in October 2012 affected about 0.3% queries
The main reason why Penguin was brought to light, was to get rid of spam – catch extreme spamming. Although, many big websites were also hit due to this update while some lost the search rankings. Inapt linking to anchor text was also one of the few reasons.

Did Penguin Benefit Anyone?

Penguin definitely added worth to the creative and fresh content that bloggers scribbled, so a heads up to their hard work! It highlighted the quality and valuable content that was obviously preferred by people who actually wanted to read. Apparently, if the content was original, complete and innovative (unlike copied or duplicated!) it would pick up pace with time.

Also, any piece of work that was written with the objective of reaching out to the readers (potential readers) without flooding it with keywords will eventually be liked by people. After all it’s all about providing your readers what they want, rankings should not be the priority of a Webmaster or SEO.

Conclusion

Google will come out with updates as and when needed to refine all the search engine results. As for Penguin, it feeds on all those websites which have used wrong SEO techniques in the past and still do. If you feel your website has been penalized, then you can rectify the situation easily. The rectification will no doubt take time, but an esteemed website with good reputation will stay clear from future Google updates.
